Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy is a non-surgical treatment using an applicator to administer mechanically produced sound waves to stimulate soft tissue at a cellular level. Shockwaves have proven to be effective for tendons - including calcifications, and muscle pain.

Treatments are quick (usually 10-20 minutes), effective and evidence-based, they can provide a non-invasive alternative to surgery or medications. In some cases it can remove the need for a surgical procedure. Many people find it painless or within their comfort zone!

About the service

Shockwave Therapy was originally introduced over 40 years ago for the non-surgical destruction of kidney stones.  Since then, the detection of the positive healing impact shockwave treatment in the last few decades has led shockwave therapy to being used in the treatment of different orthopaedic conditions.  It has proven to be so effective for tendon and muscle pain reduction, that it has been approved by NICE (and the FDA in the US) for treatment of the following conditions:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS) often mis-diagnosed as Trochanteric Bursitis
  • Golfer’s /Tennis Elbow
  • Calcification of shoulder tendons

Why choose Shockwave Therapy?

Treatments are quick (usually 10-20 minutes of a standard Osteopathy session), effective and evidence-based, they can provide a non-invasive alternative to surgery or medications. In some cases it can remove the need for a surgical procedure. Many people find it painless or within their comfort zone!

How many treatments will I need?

Typically, for tendinopathies, improvement can be felt within 3 sessions, so we offer a package of 3 sessions. More chronic conditions may require up to 6 sessions.

However you can choose to purchase on a session-by-session basis if you prefer.
