Gua Sha

Gua Sha is a traditional treatment technique associated with acupuncture and Chinese medicine where a smooth tool is used to press-stroke lubricated skin in areas of stiffness or pain. Gua translates as “to rub or press stroke” while Sha means rash, which is caused by blood coming up towards the surface of the skin during treatment as small red dots called ‘petechiae’.

Whilst Gua Sha is most often used for muscular pain and stiffness it also has anti inflammatory benefits, and is used for conditions such as fevers, colds, coughing, wheezing, and nausea.

Patients experience immediate changes in stiffness and mobility, plus Gua Sha has a cooling effect on areas of heat (by mimicking sweating), whilst managing to bring warmth into cold tissues. Gua Sha is also very effective for reducing tension, stress, and anxiety.
